MEDICARE
Medicare rebates apply to eligible eye examinations performed by a registered optometrist. Most patients with a valid Medicare card can receive a Medicare benefit for a comprehensive eye examination once every three years (or once per year for children under 18 and patients over 65, or those with an eligible condition). Darwin Eyecare is a registered Medicare provider. Please bring your Medicare card to your appointment. Note that Medicare does not cover the cost of spectacle frames, lenses, contact lenses, or optical products — only the examination fee.
PRIVATE HEALTH FUNDS
Darwin Eyecare accepts all major Australian private health funds via HICAPS on-the-spot claiming. If you have Extras cover that includes optical benefits, you can claim your rebate immediately at the time of purchase — simply bring your health fund card. Optical extras typically cover prescription glasses, contact lenses, and prescription sunglasses up to your annual limit. Benefit amounts and waiting periods vary by fund and policy level. We recommend checking your specific benefit with your fund before your appointment so you know what to expect.
CLAIMING ON THE SPOT
Our HICAPS terminal allows you to claim your private health fund benefit instantly at the point of sale. You will only need to pay any gap amount. Bring your health fund card (physical or digital in your fund’s app). If you are unable to claim on the spot, we will provide you with an itemised receipt to submit a manual claim through your fund.
VETERANS’ AFFAIRS
Darwin Eyecare accepts Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) referrals for eligible veterans and dependants. Please bring your DVA card and referral to your appointment.
